• Coffee, Not Just With Breakfast

The benefits of coffee have long been extolled to justify our need to drink so much of it. In addition to a mental boost, coffee has high levels of antioxidants and some research suggests a link between caffeine and reduced risks of cancer. So you’ll be delighted to know coffee is also great for your skin.

In a study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers found that that “consumption of coffee, a major source of dietary antioxidants, may inhibit inflammation and thereby reduce the risk of cardiovascular and other inflammatory diseases in postmenopausal women.” That’s awfully specific, but those anti-inflammatory benefits aren’t just for your heart. Using creams with coffee in them can help reduce inflammation in skin as well. That’s why we use coffee in our Coffee Bean Eye Treatment, which can help with dark circles, fine lines, and puffiness.

Reducing the bags under our eyes may seem like a small miracle all on its own, but a study, published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, suggests that topical application of caffeine actually minimizes or reverses the effects of UV damage on the skin! According to the article, even enjoying your morning cup of joe, or caffeinated tea can affect your skin: “In a recent study of 93,676 Caucasian women, each additional cup of caffeinated coffee ingested was associated with a 5% decreased risk of developing nonmelanoma skin cancer, whereas drinking decaffeinated coffee showed no such benefit.” Now imagine those benefits applied directly to the skin. In the same article, researchers note that caffeine causes skin cells damaged by ultraviolet light to self-destruct by blocking a cellular pathway involved in regulating the cell cycle.

As if reducing swelling and preventing cancer weren’t enough, coffee can also temporarily reduce the appearance of cellulite by dehydrating fat cells and making them less noticeable. We use coffee in our Sugar & Spice Scrub—great for getting bikini-ready before a trip to the beach. Coffee can also add a luster to dark hair, simply douse your tresses in this miracle beverage, leave for fifteen minutes, and rinse.

In case just enjoying a cup of coffee wasn’t reason enough, feel free to use any of the above benefits as an excuse to indulge.
